B.I.M. MASTER & Professional training course

The Big Data for Civil Engineering and Architecture- B.I.M. MASTER

Descrizione

The introduction of digitalization in the field of design is much more than a simple computer evolution and represents a veritable innovation, a new paradigm that brings the building sector closer to the so-called Industry 4.0.

Civil engineering represents a production sector that has often escaped to the systems of automation and replicability typical of the industrial process. B.I.M. - Building Information Modeling – is a procedure of management of digital data based on the interoperability of various information, by means of the new technologies of sharing of Cloud Computing and IoT: the threedimensional architectural model evolves into the Big Data by cataloguing and putting in relation all data that are developed during the design project.

It is specifically meant for civil engineering, architecture and heritage and has a role in all the steps of design, realization and management of the work.

For designing, realizing and managing public works B.I.M. is, by now, compulsory also in Italy, where the Min. Decree 560/17 has imposed it use since 2019 for successive groups of costs of the work, up to its full spreading by 2025.
The obligation to manage project phases in the field of B.I.M. concerns a wide variety of operators of the constructions sector:

  • Professionals: Architects, Engineers, Planners, Renovators, Geologists, Designers, Surveyors, Topographers
  • Enterprises: building, roads, plants, renovation, maintenance
  • Manufacturers: pre-manufacturing, components for constructions, interior furniture, urban furnishings, medical products
  • Contractors: procuring entities, technical offices of public and private organisations

The recent UNI 11337-7 standard  “Constructions and Civil Engineering Works – Digital Management of Information Processes in Constructions. Part 7: Requirements in terms of knowledge, competences and skills of the profiles involved in the management and information modelling” represents the main reference for training, since it defines the roles and the competences of the operators in the field of design, construction and management of of civil engineering, architecture and historical-monumental works.
The training path in Building Information Modeling is designed in full coherence with the recent UNI 11337-7 standard that identified four profiles involved in the process of information modelling by specifying qualifications and competences:

  1. CDE MANAGER: manager of the data sharing environment;
  2. BIM MANAGER: manager of the digitized processes;
  3. BIM COORDINATOR: coordinator of the contract information streams;
  4. BIM SPECIALIST: advanced operator in information management and modelling.

Educational offer

The training path in Building Information Modeling proposes two levels of choice:

  1. Training courses organized in four individual modules, one for each specific profile identified by the UNI 11337-7 standard.  Each course module will involve a number of hours comprised between 50 and 75 approximately, delivered on the e-learning mode and integrated by autonomous study and by synchronic and diachronic training activities for 12 or 18 ECTS credits.
  2. First-level Master’s course that envisages competences for four individual courses, also awarding a title having an academic as well as a professional value. The Master’s Course will entail approximately 130 hours of lessons, delivered on the e-learning mode and integrated by autonomous study and by synchronic and diachronic training activities for approximately 45 ECTS credits; of the remainder ECTS credits, about 12 will be awarded to the seminar face-to-face and/or interactive classroom-based activities, the remainder 3 ECTS credits will be awarded for the Project Works.

Teaching method

The teaching activity is mainly carried on by means of the platform on Uninettunouniversity.net (the first portal worldwide where teaching is carried on in 5 languages: Italian, English, French, Arabic and Greek), integrated by some face-to-face and video-conferencing seminar more-in-depth studies.
In the section related to “B.I.M. MASTER & Professional training course”, the students can access all training contents available.
According to UNINETTUNO’ teaching model, the students play an active role in their own learning process and can study whenever and wherever they prefer to. The, students are supported by an online tutoring system that facilitates their training path and supplying them with the tools needed to carry out their study of a specific subject successfully.
Online tutoring is organized in classes of students and is based on an advanced system of agenda that can acknowledge any individual student and therefore customize and get the tracking of all training activities and qualitative and quantitative assessment of the each individual student’s learning progress.

How to study

The training activities are carried on in the Web-based macro-area, called the “Didactic Cyberspace”, in the section devoted to the “B.I.M. MASTER & Professional training course”.  In the “Didactic Cyberspace” the training and learning process takes place and access profiles are diversified through customized logins and passwords based on the roles played by the actors of the learning process: Professors, Tutors and Students. These three categories of users can access the same information related to each course. In particular, the Professors and Tutors can edit or replace training materials and add new ones for the whole course delivery period, whereas the student has at his disposal an area where he can enter data, information and personal notes.
The student can access:

  1. the Page of the Appointed Teaching Professor;
  2. the Page of the Tutor.

In these pages there are the Learning Environments where is possible to access:

Didactic Materials which represent the course contents: digitized video lessons, indexed by bookmarks allowing for hypertextual and multimedia linking to books, selected bibliographical references, texts of the exercises, lists of selected websites. The system of dynamic bookmarks gives the Internet-based videolessons a hypertextual character allowing different levels of navigation: from one lesson to the other one, among subjects of a single lesson, between the materials referring to the same subject.

Distance Tutoring. The students enrolled in this training path will be assisted in every step of their study path by Professors-Tutors. The Telematic Professor-Tutor, represents a guide as well as a constant presence along the Learning Process. The distance Tutoring activities may be carried out in two ways:

  • in a synchronic mode, by using, video chats, interactive classrooms, implemented in the Didactic Cyberspace, but also in the three-dimensional classroom created on UNINETTUNO Island of Knowledge on Second Life.
  • in a diachronic mode, through tools such as e-mail and discussion forums on the Internet. The discussion forums, related to the topics of the course, enable to enlarge dialogue and trigger a collaborative learning and give the opportunity for autonomous thinking on the issue being discussed and on the study activities carried on.

The virtual classroom in UNINETTUNO Island of Knowledge on Second Life
On UNINETTUNO Island of Knowledge we realized a 3D Auditorium devoted to the “B.I.M. MASTER & Professional Training Course”. In this environment the students and professors/tutors’ avatars interact in an augmented-reality environment. Practice work, assessment tests and videoconferences with the protagonists of the Master’s Course attending through their avatars are carried out, as well as real-time practice activities guided by the professors/tutors’ avatars.

Teaching activity structure

The aim of the training path is that of meeting opposing needs that, on one hand, requires a basic scientific and methodological training and, on the other hand, must envisage the creation of professional profiles having a high degree of technical and specialized training as well as suited to the competences identified to the UNI 11337-7 standard. This is why it is envisaged a more-in-depth study of the basic and characterizing subjects that supply a methodological training required to analyze and model more complex technical-scientific problems, integrated by an offer of more specialized subjects that allow to characterize specific skills by supplying competences, capabilities and qualifications for the following profiles:

  1. CDE MANAGER: namely a manager of the data sharing environment;
  2. BIM MANAGER: namely a manager of the digitized processes;
  3. BIM COORDINATOR: namely a coordinator of the contract information flows
  4. BIM SPECIALIST: namely an advanced operator in information management and modelling.

In terms of competences and capabilities, the profile n° 1: Manager of the data sharing environment (CDE MANAGER) defines a professional who deals with the realization and management of digital data sharing environment. The main aim of this competence is that of putting into relation the various information contents through the exchange, management, storing of data (digitized and basically computerized) in order to assure uniqueness, traceability and coherence to the information, thus assuring the fairness of the information streams and identifying the best techniques to protect the information. In short, the CDE MANAGER must know the structure of
Big Data and of Cloud Computing, besides having skills related to the digital technologies in general.
In terms of competences and abilities, the profile n° 2: Manager of digitized processes (BIM MANAGER) defines a professional that deals, in the framework of general digitized processes of an organization (company, public board etc.), of supervision or coordination of the contracts in the field of design, constructions or management of building works, by defining the BIM instructions and the way in which the digitalization process impacts on work organization and tools. Basically, the BIM MANAGER is the guarantee for the implementation of the digitalization of the general processes of an organization and has the task of defining:

  • The rules and procedures for information management;
  • The criteria on which the structuring of the information models are based;
  • The logical and functional structure of the collaborative environments;
  • The set of characteristic attributes and documents;
  • The models for setting up the digitized work flows;
  • An optimal planning and programming of the submission of the information models of the contractor.

In the final analysis, the BIM MANAGER must know the structure of the management processes aimed at quality as well as having the skills to analyze and design the organizational-corporate setups.
In terms of competences and abilities, the profile n° 3. Coordinator of the contract information flows (BIM COORDINATOR) defines a professional who, in the context of the management of the digitization processes works at the level of the individual contract. The BIM COORDINATOR acts as guarantee of the efficiency and fairness of the digitized processes related to a specific contract, in an engineering and architectural context, relating, in a different way, based on the fact that it works in mono-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary context. In general, he prepares the contract information specifications, analyzes the information management plan, sets up the flows of digital work in the data sharing environment in such a way as the information flows processed by the individual software application packages (design, structure, calculations etc.) do not incur in losses or distortions. In addition, he contributes to identify the human and material resources useful to execute the contract. In the final analysis, the BIM COORDINATOR must know the structure of the processes of flow of the information data, supporting the planning of the working steps and optimizing the staff’s capacities of contract in the direction of data interoperability.
In terms of competences and capabilities, the profile n° 4: Advanced operator in information management and modelling (BIM SPECIALIST) defines the profile of an operator possessing advanced skills in information management and modelling. Working at the individual contract and implementing specific digitized procedures by means of the object-based modelling represents the subject capable of introducing into the operational modes of the information modelling and management of a contract his disciplinary knowledge. The BIM SPECIALIST contributes to the creation of the contract information content as well as to the material resources useful to execute the contract. In the final analysis, the BIM SPECIALIST must know the logics underlining modelling processes, beside possessing the skills of software operator. The participation in the four course modules takes shape of First-Level Master, thus integrating the educational offer even with a title having an academic as well as a professional value.

Duration and assessments

It is possible to enroll and start the training activities at any time of the year. Upon enrolment, the student has the following timeframes to complete the selected training path:

  1. Single individual modules: 6 months for each course
  2. First-level Master’s Course: one year.

These timeframes are approximate and not compulsory; in case of events that may have made impossible to complete the path within the suggested timeframe, the student may submit a request of extension that will be duly assessed.
The final assessment of the learning process consists in assessing, on professor/tutor’s part, the tracing of the training activities carried on by the student; a final exam is not required.
