Course objectives

The Research Doctorate Course in “Law and Economics of digital society”, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental, aims at deepening implications and problems related to sustainable development also considering the growing exploitation of new technologies.
The Course is structured in two curricula:

  1. Innovation, business and sustainable development,
  2. Artificial intelligence, governance and new technologies.

The expected duration is three years. The activities are articulated and divided between in-depth study and integrative teaching, elaboration of the doctoral thesis and further applicative research of scientific relevance.
The teachings combine a theoretical approach with an empirical one, through the study of the legal-economic implications, in a complementary way to technical insights. In particular, emphasis is given on the relationship between business, new technologies, and their context of reference, as well as the comparison between the technology “of freedom” and “of control”, particularly important in the information society.

Admission requirements

The admission requirement to access the Course is the possession, by the expiry date of the competition notice, of an Italian degree (old system) or a specialist and/or master’s degree (new system) as specified in the LINK, or a similar academic title obtained abroad and previously recognized as equivalent by the Coordinator of the Doctorate Course, after consulting the Professors’ Commission or in the context of inter-university cooperation and mobility agreements, for the sole purpose of admission to the Doctorate Course.
The knowledge of at least one foreign language in addition to Italian is also a necessary requirement to access the Course.

Selection procedure

The admission to the Course is based on a public selection, among the candidates who have submitted an application for admission within the deadline and in the manner indicated in the competition notice.
The selection will take into account the evaluation of the candidate’s titles and research project, as well as the results of an oral exam, during which the candidate’s knowledge of a foreign language will also be evaluated.

Curricula

The Doctorate Course is structured in two alternative curricula:

  1. Innovation, business and sustainable development, and
  2. Artificial intelligence, governance and new technologies.

The two curricula share a common solid background of skills and pursue interdisciplinary, innovative, and synergistic objectives. The curriculum in Innovation, business and sustainable development mainly focuses on the aspects related to organizational and managerial dynamics, while the one in Artificial intelligence, governance and the new technologies is more focused on the contractual and relational events of the same evolutionary phenomenon.

Career options

The Doctorate Course aims at training highly qualified and specialized professionals and academics, able to deal with the implications of digital evolution both from a theoretical and practical point of view, with knowledge of technical profiles, and also argumentative skills and legal-economic elaboration skills.
The doctors, at the end of the Course, will have multidisciplinary knowledge that they will be able to use with scientific method and critical thinking, in approaching the problems related to the development and use of new technologies and their impact on the issue of sustainable development, as well as, in general, related to the digital society.
The acquired skills will allow them to place themselves in the professional and/or scientific world, both public and private, holding top and high-profile positions.

Teaching plan

The teaching plan provides for the achievement of 30 credits declined in five courses, provided ad hoc and borrowed from master’s degree courses, as well as seminar cycles, on subjects related to the Doctorate Course and the chosen curriculum.
In the context of training activities, the PhD Course also provides for teaching activities in a foreign language for the strengthening of language skills; teaching activities focused on the use of artificial intelligence and new technologies in corporate governance and business organization; teaching activities oriented to the optimal use of databases, virtual libraries and research networks.
