Accessibility

The portal www.uninettunouniversity.net has been made accessible to people with disabilities, meeting the standards established by WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1) at level AA. The WCAG 2.1 AA level satisfies a wide range of recommendations to make web content more accessible. Uninettuno's accessibility statement is available on the portal at https://www.uninettunouniversity.net/en/accessibility.aspx.

In addition to the implementations in the portal's native software, a specific software has been introduced, an accessibility widget.

The accessibility widget (Click here to open the accessibility widget) not only allows compliance with the standards established by WCAG 2.1 at level AA, but introduces a series of additional features to facilitate access in various cases.

The content of the portal has thus been made more accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning difficulties, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity, and combinations of the above. By implementing and adhering to the WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines, the portal's content has also become more usable for users in general.

The software helps to facilitate content usage for people with disabilities thanks to two components that work simultaneously: Artificial Intelligence and the Accessibility Interface.

Through the accessibility interface (recognizable by the icon representing accessibility ) it is possible to set the following usage profiles:

  • Blindness: this profile adjusts the site to be compatible with screen readers like HAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.
  • Motor skill disorders: keyboard navigation (without mouse), navigation with numeric keys only, voice commands in supported browsers, generation of page structure landmarks.
  • Color blindness
  • Low Vision Profile: this profile adjusts the site to be accessible to most people with visual issues causing reduced visual acuity, reduced visual field, and photophobia. Following the two cardinal principles of low vision, which are magnification and high contrast.
  • Epilepsy: this profile allows people with epilepsy to use the site safely, eliminating the risk of seizures resulting from flashing animations and risky color combinations.
  • ADHD Friendly Profile: this profile adjusts the site to be accessible to most visual disorders like Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Aging
  • Dyslexia

Furthermore, also through the widget interface, it is possible to modify:

  • Content: Increases readability. This section of the interface allows users to adjust the way the site's content is displayed, making it as readable as possible. The section is dedicated to DSA profiles and all users with visual disabilities, such as blurred vision and low vision.
  • Color: Enhances visibility. This section of the interface allows adjusting colors and contrasts. People with various degrees of color blindness or visual disabilities might not be able to see the content well, while light-sensitive users might not be able to navigate the site with white backgrounds.
  • Navigation: Minimizes distractions. This section of the interface offers adjustments designed to help people with visual disabilities, cognitive disabilities, or motor disabilities to better orient themselves on the site. This is achieved by providing them with shortcuts, reducing distractions and noise, and offering guiding elements.

Our goal is to be able to support the widest possible range of browsers and assistive technologies, including the most popular systems with a high market share, such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, and assistive technologies like JAWS and NVDA for Windows and Mac.
